Direct cremation is cremation without a viewing, visitation or ceremony with the body present. That is how the Federal Trade Commission defines it in the Funeral Rule. You can still hold a memorial later, with or without the ashes, wherever and whenever your family wants.

- You don't have to buy a casket. For direct cremation the funeral home must offer at least one alternative container (for example, an unfinished wood box or a fiberboard container), and you can bring your own.
- Ask how long it takes and when you'd get the ashes back.
- Compare at least two or three before you decide.
